The build

From old spa to new pool, step by step.

Most of our case studies start with a lawn. This one started with concrete: a full deck behind a Wellington home, with a raised, tiled spa built into it. Our founder Florian described the job in one sentence: “We removed a concrete spa and put the pool in the deck.” Here is what that looked like.

The spa that was there

The backyard was already hardscaped from the house to the fence. The concrete spa sat in the middle of that deck, raised above it and trimmed in blue tile. Replacing it meant working inside a finished yard, with the house on one side and fences close by.

A new opening in an old deck

With the spa removed, the deck was cut and the ground opened to the footprint of the new pool. The excavation was then finished with a stone base, screeded and checked with a level, so the shell would land on a flat, firm floor.

Over the roof

The Tuscan 11.20 arrived from Latham in one piece on a flatbed trailer. With the house between the street and the backyard, the crane picked it up from the road and carried it over the roof, and the crew guided it down by hand on the other side.

A Tuscan 11.20, set where the spa was

The Tuscan 11.20 is a rectangular Latham pool: 20′3″ by 11′1″, from 3′11″ to 5′2″ deep, holding about 5,000 gallons, with its steps and seating molded in. This one is in sapphire blue. It is the smallest of the five Tuscan sizes, which is what makes it a fit for a yard like this one.

Filled, and tied into the deck

The shell was filled with water as the backfill came up, so the walls stayed supported on both sides. Steel and forms were then set around the rim for the concrete that ties the top of the pool to the deck around it. Like every pool we install, this one runs on salt water, with a variable-speed pump and Wi-Fi automation for the pump and lights, all part of the standard package.

The finished product

The finish is a paver deck: pavers around the pool, over the old concrete and the new, so the deck reads as one surface from the house to the fence. Decking is the main add-on to any pool quote: we price it at $18 per square foot, and every pool page on this site has a calculator for it.

Questions

This project, answered.

What people ask when they see this backyard. Every project is quoted for its own property.

Can you replace an old concrete spa with a fiberglass pool?

Yes. On this project the concrete spa was removed, the existing deck was opened to the footprint of the new pool, and a Latham Tuscan 11.20 was set in its place. Every property is different, so we look at the existing structure and the access before we quote.

Does the Tuscan come in other sizes and colors?

Yes. The Tuscan comes in five sizes, from the 11.20 in this project (20′3″ long, from $49,622) to the 14.40 (39′11″ long, from $70,431), and in six Latham shell colors including the sapphire blue used here.

How much does a project like this cost?

The Latham Tuscan 11.20 starts at $49,622 installed with our standard package — salt water system, variable-speed pump, Wi-Fi automation, dirt removal, electrical subpanel and permit coordination. Removing an existing spa and working inside an existing deck is specific to each property, so it is part of your personal quote. Decking is $18 per square foot.

Why was the pool lifted over the house?

A fiberglass pool arrives in one finished piece, and this shell is just over 20 feet long. When the house stands between the street and the backyard, a crane lifts it over the roof. The lift is planned in advance.

Do you build in Wellington?

Yes. Wellington is about 10 miles west of our West Palm Beach showroom. Our installation includes the permit coordination and the engineer plan, and many Wellington communities also run an architectural review, which we prepare the package for. See the Wellington service area page.
