The build

From lawn to pool and spa, step by step.

Our founder Florian summed this job up in one line: “We had to remodel the whole backyard.” The photos show what that meant. A lawn ringed by mature trees and hedges became the site for a 35-foot pool with a spa built into it, and by the end the yard around it had been reworked from end to end.

A whole backyard, reworked

The lawn came up first. A compact excavator worked inside the line of trees, the dig ran the full length of the pool, and the spoil was hauled away as part of our standard installation. With the hole open, the base was prepared so the shell would land on a flat, firm floor.

Thirty-five feet on a trailer

The Astoria 14 arrived from Latham in one piece, pool and spa together, on a trailer behind a pickup. A crane set up in the street to lift it from the road into the backyard. The lift is planned well before delivery day, because once the shell is in the air there is one place for it to go.

A pool and a spa in one shell

The Astoria 14 is a rectangular pool with its spa molded into the same shell: 35′ by 14′, from 3′6″ to 6′6″ deep, holding about 10,700 gallons. Because the spa is part of the pool, there is no second shell to set, level and tie in. This one is in coastal bronze, one of six Latham shell colors, and the photos show its warm speckled finish before any water went in.

Braced, plumbed and filled

The shell was braced across the top while the plumbing went on, then filled with water as the backfill came up so the walls stayed supported on both sides. The Astoria 14 package runs on a 2.7 HP pump with a 90 kBTU heat pump, a salt water system, a 400 sq ft cartridge filter and Wi-Fi automation for the pump and lights. In Boca Raton the permit goes through the city’s own building department, and the permit coordination and engineer plan are part of our installation.

A concrete collar, then stone

A concrete collar was poured around the rim of both the pool and the spa, tying the top of the shell to the ground around it. The deck went down on top: light stone pavers on all sides, with a coping course at the waterline and a bridge of stone between the pool and the spa. Decking is the main add-on to any pool quote. We price it at $18 per square foot, and every pool page on this site has a calculator for it.

Coastal bronze, framed in stone

Filled and running, coastal bronze does something a blue shell does not: the water reads deep and natural, closer to a lagoon than a swimming pool, and it mirrors the trees around it. There is no screen enclosure on this project. When these photos were taken the stone was freshly laid and the ground around it was still bare soil from the build.

Questions

This project, answered.

What people ask when they see this backyard. Every project is quoted for its own property.

How much does a pool and spa like this cost?

Today the Latham Astoria 14 starts at $83,832 installed, with a heat pump included, plus our standard package — salt water system, Wi-Fi automation, dirt removal, electrical subpanel and permit coordination. Decking adds $18 per square foot. Your final quote is personal to your lot.

Is the spa part of the pool?

Yes. The Astoria 14 is a single fiberglass shell with the spa molded in, so the pool and the spa arrive and are set as one piece. There is no second shell to install next to it.

Is the pool heated?

The starting price of the Astoria 14 includes a 90 kBTU heat pump, along with a 2.7 HP pump, a salt water system and a 400 sq ft cartridge filter.

What does coastal bronze look like with water in it?

Coastal bronze is one of six Latham shell colors. As the photos of this project show, it gives the water a deep, natural tone instead of a bright blue, and it reflects the sky and the trees around it.

Do you build in Boca Raton?

Yes. Boca Raton is about 24 miles south of our West Palm Beach showroom, inside our 45-mile service area. Permits go through the city’s own building department, and our installation includes the permit coordination and the engineer plan. See the Boca Raton service area page.
